SSS fund drive needs final push for goal

Tuesday, July 2, 2002

As of Saturday, Storm Lake's Star Spangled Spectacular fund drive was about $1,500 short.

Drive co-chairmen Craig Fratzke and Dick Hakes were scrambling early this week to contact past donors and remind them that the July Fourth holiday looms ahead and the celebration needs their help.

"The Commodores raised the drive goal to $20,000 this year because of increasing expenses," said Fratzke. "People have been great about giving and we have collected about $18,500 so far, but we'd really like to reach that $20,000 goal if we can."

The drive organizers said letters were mailed to more 1,100 area businesses and individuals who were identified as suppporters and potential supporters of the campaign. To date, about 400 have responded with checks.

"That's a pretty good percentage, but if we got even small checks from some of the others who were contacted by mail, we'd reach the goal," said Fratzke. "We hope people recognize how much entertainment is provided for them free through this celebration every year. We appeciate any support."

He added that many people not formally contacted are sending donations as well. Any interested party can send a donation to Star Spangled Spectacular, PO Box 603, Storm Lake, IA 50588.
