Meth lab suspect dies

Tuesday, July 2, 2002

Police await autopsy results

A man taken into custody last Thursday at a methamphetamine lab in Storm Lake has died.

Joel Eickholt, 43, of Cherokee, died Saturday morning at Mercy Medical Center in Sioux City.

An autopsy was performed Saturday afternoon, with results expected in about a week, according to Storm Lake Public Safety Director Mark Prosser.

Eickholt had been taken into custody following a bust at the Vista Economy Inn on North Lake Avenue Thursday morning. Police allege Eickholt was manufacturing meth in a motel room.

At the scene, Eickholt told police he ingested an unknown quantity of meth. He was first transported to Buena Vista Regional Medical Center and then airlifted to Sioux City.

Police were unable to question him due to rapid deterioration of his physical condition.

The investigation continues. Laura Anthony, 38, also of Cherokee, was charged on Thursday with possession of a meth precursor and aiding and abetting manufacture of meth.

Police seized about 17 grams of meth, officials said.
