Meth lab found in Storm Lake

Thursday, June 27, 2002

A portion of North Lake Avenue was shut down after a meth lab was found in a room at a motel in Storm Lake.

The Storm Lake Police and Fire Departments were dispatched to the Vista Motel at 1316 North Lake Ave. about 9:30 a.m. on Thursday in regard to a possible meth lab.

The area surrounding the motel was shut down and evacuated for approximately an hour and a half, with police taping off the area from the north side of the Wal-Mart parking lot to 13th Street. Traffic was not allowed on North Lake between 12th and 13th Streets and Michigan Street in front of Storm Lake Bowl. The Burger King restaurant was evacuated and closed while police secured the scene.

At about 10:40 a.m. the streets around the motel were opened, with police moving the secure perimeter to just the Vista Motel.

One male suspect has been taken into custody. The three officers who came into contact with the suspect were decontaminated, as well as the suspect.

A hazardous materials team from Des Moines is expected to arrive around noon to decontaminate the meth lab.

More details will be available in Saturday's Pilot-Tribune.
