Community Services Center work under way

Thursday, June 27, 2002

Construction crews are hard at work inside the new Community Services Center at Faith, Hope & Charity, Inc.

The new center is located at 1723 W. Milwaukee St. in Storm Lake and was formally the Concordia Lutheran School. Two years ago, FHC entered into a unique agreement with Concordia to purchase the building; that agreement is now complete. FHC formally purchased the building on June 3, 2002 and construction started that same week. Taylor Construction of Storm Lake plans to complete the minor interior renovations in early July.

The new building, located adjacent to FHC residential home, will open up doors of opportunity for the not-for-profit organization and the families they serve, according to Development Director Mary Sorenson. The Community Services center will provide a safe, caring place for families, who care for their special needs child at home, a place to bring their child for the weekend.

FHC has offered Community Services and Respite Weekends since 1998 and has moved the program to a variety of locations as the number of families needing the service grew. The program outgrew hotel rooms and a day care facility before the agreement with Concordia Lutheran School to use their building on designated weekends and after school. When construction is complete, FHC will be able to double the number of families they serve in the Community Services program. Forty families and children currently use the service.

The cost of remodeling and purchase of the building is $400,000. FHC will kick-off a fund raising campaign next month when they host an Open House and Chamber of Commerce ribbon cutting July 31, from 4-6:30 pm.
