BVU to host three academic camps
Camps in art, flute and history
Buena Vista University will host academic summer camps in art, flute and history for students this summer. Registration for all three camps will close on June 21.
The art camp, which will run from July 14-17, is open to all high school students, and will focus on "The Process of Printmaking." Students will learn how to create various types of prints along with skills in sketching nature and in the process of critiquing work.
In addition to studio work, students will have the opportunity to exhibit their work in the BVU Art Gallery and visit the Sioux City Art Center to tour its collection. The instructor is Mary Mello-Nee, assistant professor of art at BVU.
The cost for the art camp is $325.
The flute camp from July 14-19 is open to middle school through high school students. In "Flute Performance Clinic," students will receive private flute lessons from a master teacher and will practice the flute individually and as part of an ensemble. They will also complete coursework in Music Theory and Musicianship.
Faculty and camper concerts to include both ensembles (with various flutes) and individual recitals will be preformed. Dr. David Klee, assistant professor of woodwinds and director of jazz studies at BVU, and Tiffany Holmes, freelance flutist from Omaha, NE., are the instructors.
The cost for the flute camp is $355.
The history camp from July 14-17 is open to students in middle school through high school and will focus on "National History Day Preparation" to help students jump-start their research on "Rights and Responsibilities," the theme for National History Day 2003.
Students will learn about possible local, national and international topics, create a museum display and learn how to do university-level research. Dr. Dixee Bartholomew-Feis, associate professor of history at BVU, and Crystal Johnson, certified history teacher, are the instructors. The cost is $299.
All prices listed for the camps include room and board and use of BVU's innovative wireless laptop computer system. There are reduced day prices available for all of the camps, as well: art camp, $295; history camp, $268; and flute camp, $305.
