3rd annual memory walk

A dedicated committee has begun planning for the third annual Buena Vista/Cherokee Memory Walk to benefit individuals in both counties who are affected by Alzheimer's disease or related disorders. The Memory Walk is being held Saturday, June 22 at Spring Lake Park in Cherokee. Registration will begin at 8:30 a.m., with warm-ups at 9 a.m. and the walk around the lake will get underway at 9:15 a.m.

Co-chairs for the 2002 Memory Walk are Shelly Allen of Careage Hills and Ken Nelson of the Cherokee Villa Nursing and Rehab Center. "We are really looking forward to this year's Walk," said Allen. "It gives everyone the opportunity to help individuals dealing with Alzheimer's disease right here in their community."

Upon returning from the Walk, participants will be greeted with a picnic lunch. Prizes will be given to the top team and individual fundraisers. There are incentive prizes available for all participants to earn and everyone is registered for great door prizes.

Last Year's walk raised $5000 for families throughout Buena Vista and Cherokee Counties. Those dollars helped the Big Sioux Chapter of the Alzheimer's Association maintain programs and services for caregivers and families. Programs and services include in-home respite; education for families, the community and professionals; support groups; family assistance programs; 24 hours- toll-free helpline; DIALZ; resource library; advocacy and public policy and the Safe Return Program.
