Schossow takes two

Tuesday, May 28, 2002

Lucas Schossow finally lived up to the billing at a state track and field meet competition.

The Galva-Holstein senior had always had the best distance in the discus at district meets, but when it came to the state meet, it was a different story.

Schossow wrote the final chapter in his prep career by winning both the discus and the shot put in Class 1A at the state track and field meet at Drake Stadium in Des Moines on Saturday.

Galva-Holstein finished ninth in the team standings with Schossow's 14 points. He won the shot put with a throw of 54 feet, 5 1/2 inches and captured the discus with a throw of 155-4.

While there weren't any other area champions in Class 1A, there were several who placed in the top eight.

Newell-Fonda's Jason Ripke finished second in the discus right behind Schossow with a throw of 147-5. Ripke's teammate, Jared Daniel was fifth in the 400 meters with a clocking of 51.64 seconds.

Schaller-Crestland finished third in the mile medley relay. The tandem of Josh Robley, Jacob Sippel, Dave Bloyer and Jeff Witzke finished in a time of 3 minutes, 38.13 seconds. The Wildcats finished sixth in the 4x400 relay. The quartet of Robley, Justin Witzke, A.J. Dahm and Bloyer posted a time of 3:30.10.

Sioux Central's Mike Ruhs tied for sixth place in the high jump with a leap of 6-2, while Newell-Fonda's Eric Johnson finished eighth in 6-0.

Laurens-Marathon's Jesse Schmidt was 15th in the long jump with a leap of 20-4 1/4 and Schaller-Crestland's Struchen placed 23rd in 18-11 1/2.

Newell-Fonda's medley unit of Doug White, Dustin Sievers, Daniel and Beau Artist placed seventh in a time of 3:40.89. The Laurens-Marathon team of Brandon Bush, Schmidt, John Hopkins and David Winkler were 15th with a time of 3:45.68.

Newell-Fonda's 4x800 relay quartet of Kurt Olsen, Alan Baskerville, Artist and Daniel finished seventh with a time of 8:18.65. Galva-Holstein was 12th in 8:25.72.

Alta's Steve Hamer was 12th in the 1,600 meters with a time of 4:39.81. Newell-Fonda's Olsen placed 15th in the 800 meters with a time of 2:07.49.

Several area athletes participated, but did not qualify for the finals. Newell-Fonda's Jamie Erie ran the 110 high hurdles in 16.64 seconds. Ruhs ran a time of 57.36 seconds in the 400 low hurdles. Justin Witzke of Schaller-Crestland ran 58.27 in the same event.
