5-year old injured
Storm Lake Police have arrested a local man for reckless driving and leaving the scene of an accident after a search for the vehicle that struck a Storm Lake child Saturday afternoon.
The 5-year-old boy was among some people carrying a canoe across Lakeshore Drive near Russell Street when a car struck him at about 4:30 p.m.
The child suffered head injuries and was taken to Buena Vista Regional Medical Center. He has been released following treatment.
The vehicle that hit the child fled the scene, and police asked for the public's help in finding the blue Grand Am after all attempts to broadcast a bulletin to area law enforcement failed to turn up the suspect car.
On Sunday, police located a car matching the description in a garage at 122 Seneca Street. They obtained permission to search the garage and conducted a series of interviews that led them to the driver. Almost exactly 24 hours after the collision, officers took into custody Jonny Juarez, 25, Storm Lake, who was located at 410 Geneseo.
He is charged with Leaving the Scene of an Accident, No Insurance, Failure to Maintain Control, Reckless Driving, Failure to Yield to a Pedestrian and Obstructed View. He was booked into Buena Vista County Jail on $3,575 bond.
Shortly afterward, police arrested a second subject accused of driving the car after the accident and helping in an attempt to hide it. Hersson Juarez-Jarquin, 19, Storm Lake, is charged with No Drivers License, No Insurance, Obstructed View and Interference with Official Acts. He was jailed on $1,300 bond.
