Bernice L. Hamelau, 99, of Buena Vista Manor Care Center, formerly of Union and Marshalltown, died Thursday, April 11, at Buena Vista Regional Medical Center.
Graveside funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, April 16, at the Union Cemetery, Union, with Reverend Gregg Davison of Trinity Lutheran Evangelical Church, Marshaltown, officiating. Friends may call for visitation from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., Tuesday, at the Biersborn Funeral Home, in Union. Memorials may be directed to the Bernice Hamelau Memorial Fund.
Bernice was born September 4, 1902, at Union, the daughter of Robert L. and Minnie (Harris) Anderson. She attended Union schools and graduated from Pasadena High School, Pasadena, CA. in 1920. She returned to Iowa where she attended Iowa State Teacher's College (now UNI) in Cedar Falls, earning her teaching certificate in 1922. She taught school in the Chester Country Schools near Union from 1923-1924. She married James Ivan Foster in 1923. The couple had made their home in the Union and Marshalltown areas and they were later divorced. She then married William H. Hamelau in 1938 in Marshalltown. Bernice lived in Marshalltown until moving to the McCord Manor in 1992 to be near her son and family. In 1998, she moved to the Buena Vista Manor Care Center.
She is survived by her son, Robert and wife Coleen Foster, Lakeside; and grandson Scott and wife Mary Jo Foster, Pella; and granddaughter Rona and husband Donnie Loss, Wesley; and seven great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband William in 1973 and a grandson Terry Foster.
