Funeral services for Carl A. Backhaus, Jr., 68, of Aurelia, will be 2 p.m. Wednesday, April 17, at the First Congregational Church in Aurelia, with Lay Pastor Bruce Rapp officiating.
Burial will be in the Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Aurelia. Visitation will be Tuesday from 4 - 8 p.m., with the family present from 6 - 8 p.m., at the Redig Funeral Home in Aurelia.
Carl died Saturday, April 13, at this home in Aurelia.
Carl Alfred Backhaus, Jr., was born October 31, 1933, the son of Carl and Clara (Schumann) Backhaus, at Schleswig. He grew up in the Schleswig area and attended the country schools. He was baptized and confirmed at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Schleswig. Carl served in the United States Army from 1955 to 1958. Carl moved to Aurelia in 1960, and worked at the Farmer's Co-op for 33 years. He enjoyed gardening, fishing and camping. He was a devoted husband and father. Special joys in his life were his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Preceding Carl in death were his parents; siblings, Otto Backhaus, Lucille Kruse, Gertrude Ernst, Fern Stier, and an infant brother; two step-sons; James and Robert Hoops.
Survivors include his wife of 20 years, Janet Backhaus of Aurelia; three daughters, Sheree and her husband Brad Booth of Aurelia, Janene and her husband Mark Braunschweig of Cherokee, Carla and her husband Marc Schwanz of Holstein; and one step-son, Bill and his wife Debra Hoops of Overland Park, KS. Also surviving are 16 grandchildren, Allan and Adam Booth, Dana and T.J. Braunschweig, Leigh Peterson, Katina Casper, Destiny Peterson, Brooke Anderson, Keith and Elisabeth Backhaus, Amber, Megan, Josh and Bethany Schwanz, and Jessica and Samantha Hoops; three great-grandchildren, Halee Booth, Peyton Braunschweig, and Mazy Casper; nieces and nephews and other relatives and friends.
