Burnside, Tollefson receive UDMO honors

Monday, April 15, 2002

Lorna Burnside and Bob Tollefson received special recognition at the 2002 Upper Des Moines Opportunity, Inc. (UDMO) Annual Meeting and Volunteer Recognition.

Each year UDMO hosts a banquet to honor those volunteers who have made a difference in our programs and in the lives of those we serve.

Lorna Burnside has served on the Buena Vista County UDMO advisory board for nearly 18 years and also represents Buena Vista County on the UDMO multi-county board. Along with her role as a Buena Vista County Supervisor, this involvement ensures that Burnside stays in touch with the needs of the people in her county. In addition, each year Burnside donates numerous hours to the UDMO Buena Vista County garage sale - raising funds to help Buena Vista County families in need.

Bob Tollefson has shared his talents in Storm Lake Head Start classrooms for many years and currently volunteers in the Buena Vista South classroom one morning each week. Tollefson is a wonderful role model, exhibiting patience and kindness while engaging the children in educational activities.

"We appreciate the commitment of all of our volunteers and look forward to their continued participation in our programs," local director Joan Spooner said.

Upper Des Moines Opportunity, Inc. is a private, non-profit 501(c)3 organization and one of 18 community action agencies in Iowa. UDMO's service area includes 12 counties in northwest and north central Iowa: Buena Vista, Clay, Dickinson, Emmet, Hamilton, Humboldt, O'Brien, Osceola, Palo Alto, Pocahontas, Webster and Wright. Since its inception in 1966, UDMO has been helping the low-income, elderly and northwest Iowa residents with disabilities. The agency helps prepare children for life-long learning, helps families become more self-sufficient, helps communities improve and expand housing opportunities and helps local governments by providing emergency assistance programs and services that would otherwise drain general relief funding.
