SL soccer team drops opener

Spencer scored four goals in the first 15 minutes of the match as it went on to hand Storm Lake an 8-5 setback in a soccer match played on Wednesday night at Spencer.

Storm Lake spotted Spencer a 4-0 lead before Jairo Cortez scored to put the Tornadoes on the scoreboard. Bounta Phanthavong was credited with the assist.

Spencer scored two more goals to take a 6-1 lead at the half.

Five minutes into the second half, Cortez scored his second goal of the match to make it 6-2.

After a Spencer goal, Storm Lake pulled within 7-4 on goals by Jorge Tarin and Isaac Cruz. Cortez and Caleb Ehlers each had an assist.

Spencer added a goal to make it 8-4 before Ehlers finished the scoring with a goal late in the match.

Storm Lake won the junior varsity match 3-0. Josue Cisneros scored all three goals for the Tornadoes. Jose Martinez and Steve Brown each had an assist.

Storm Lake, now 0-1, plays host to Sioux City West on Monday and Carroll Kuemper on Tuesday.
