BV gets dramatics in sweep over Red Raiders

Dan Nuehring's single scored Ben Lickteig with the winning run in the bottom of the ninth of the first game

Nick Beard's single scored Travis Wielenga with the game-winning run in the nightcap as Buena Vista swept a doubleheader from Northwestern by scores of 6-5 and 3-2 on Monday in Storm Lake.

Lickteig reached on an error in the ninth inning of the first game. He advanced to second on a groundout and raced on home when Nuehring singled.

Buena Vista scored a run in the second inning on a Tom Cooper solo home run. The Beavers plated two more in the fourth on a two-run home run by Nuehring. He had three hits and three RBIs in the game.

After Northwestern scored three runs in the top of the fifth inning to take a 5-3 lead, Buena Vista tied the score at 5-5 with two runs in the bottom half of the frame.

Beard walked and later scored on an infield error. Cooper walked and later scored on a single by Cory Kennedy.

Eric Hoffman started and went five innings. He allowed six hits, three earned runs, walked one and struck out three. Nathan Kluve pitched four innings in relief, allowing two hits and no runs.

Buena Vista, which had seven hits in the game, won the game despite making four errors.

The rally in the nightcap started with a one-out single by Wielenga in the seventh. He stole second base, and after a strikeout, Beard delivered a clutch two-out single to score Wielenga and end the game.

Buena Vista scored a run in the first on a groundout by Cooper. The Beavers tied the game at 2-2 in the third inning on a sacrifice fly by Beard.

Wielenga collected three of Buena Vista's five hits. Justin McAtee added a double. The Beavers committed two errors.

Dan Christiansen got the win, improving his record to 4-0 overall. He allowed four hits, two earned runs, walked six and struck out six over five innings. Cody Tibbetts pitched two innings in relief, allowing one hit, no runs and striking out three.

Buena Vista, now 9-4 overall, plays host to Briar Cliff today at 2 p.m. The Beavers host Wartburg on Saturday at 1 p.m.
