Jamie Taxted, who won a national championship at 125 pounds earlier this month, wrestled in the Dan Gable Classic "Spirit of the Heartland," a wrestling tribute to America's Heroes on Friday night in Cedar Rapids.
The Buena Vista senior, who is a member of the National Team, wrestled Minnesota's Leroy Vega in the 125-pound match.
"I'm happy to have finished my career at Buena Vista with a national championship," Taxted said. "I enter this match without any pressure and am looking forward to enjoying my final match. The competition will be great and I will have to wrestle well against Vega to have a chance at a win."
"Jamie is a person who thrives in a competitive atmosphere," Buena Vista coach Al Baxter said. "He knows when to put it all together and loves pressure situations. I'm so happy he reached one of his goals in his collegiate career at Buena Vista by attaining a national title in wrestling this season."
Cael Sanderson of Iowa State, who just finished an unblemished 159-0 career last weekend with a national championship, will also take part in the event. Jorge Borgen and Cliff Thompson of Upper Iowa were also selected.
The event featured a patriotic theme complete with color guards and a musical tribute to the fighting spirit of America. Several special guests, including members of the armed forces, veterans, New York City Police Department and New York City Fire Department members will be present.
