Dan Christiansen had a no-hitter for 6 1/3 innings before settling on a one-hitter to help send Buena Vista to a 5-1 win over Palm Beach Atlantic on Wednesday in Fort Pierce, Fla.
Christiansen, a former Sioux Central prep, was two outs away from throwing his first career no-hitter. He allowed one earned run, walked five and struck out five over seven innings to improve his record to 3-0 on the season.
Buena Vista supported Christiansen with 11 hits. Travis Wielenga went 3-for-4 with an RBI. Dan Nuehring was 2-for-4 with a double. Justin McAtee, a Storm Lake native, was 2-for-4 with one RBI.
Tom Cooper drove in two runs with a double and Lance Ploeger also had an RBI.
Buena Vista split a pair of games on Wednesday. The Beavers lost to Elmhurst College 2-1 and beat Ramapo 7-4.
The Beavers had five hits in the loss. Kara Rea scattered seven hits, allowed two earned runs, walked none and struck out three in taking the loss.
Crystal Richardson and Holli Protexter each had a double to lead the Beavers' eight-hit attack. Katie Richardson, Gelene Bousum and Laura Lunders each drove in a run.
Kelly Kalvelage was the winning pitcher. She allowed five hits, two earned runs, walked one and struck out one in 4 2/3 innings. Rea gave up two hits and no runs in 2 1/3 innings of relief to record the save.
