Petersen homers, freshman wins debut for Buena Vista

FORT PIERCE, Fla. - Chris Petersen clubbed a two-run home run and Dan Nuehring belted a two-run double to help propel Buena Vista to an 11-5 victory over Hilbert College on its spring trip in Fort Pierce, Fla.

Buena Vista, now 6-4 overall, collected nine hits in the game. Nick Beard delivered an RBI triple. It was Petersen's first career homer.

Buena Vista freshman Nick Ginapp looked impressive in his college pitching debut. Ginapp allowed five hits, four earned runs, walked three and struck out one over four innings.

Lance Ploeger allowed no hits and no runs in three innings.

Buena Vista's pitching staff surrendered 21 runs in a pair of losses on Monday. The Beavers lost the first game 14-10 to Western Connecticut State. Buena Vista had plenty of offense, pounding out 15 hits.

Pat Groves had a double and drove in three runs, and Quinn Hildman drove in a pair of runs to power the Beavers. Travis Wielenga delivered an RBI double.

Lance Ploeger, Ben Lickteig and Tom Cooper each had one RBI.

Three Buena Vista pitchers combined to give up 12 hits, 10 earned runs and eight walks. The Beavers also committed four errors.

Buena Vista was defeated by Principia College 7-5 in the second game. The Beavers collected 11 hits, including a solo homer by Dan Nuehring. Cooper belted two doubles, while Nick Beard drove in two runs. Lickteig also had an RBI.

Jeremiah Knutzen suffered the loss. He allowed seven hits, six earned runs, walked three and struck out four in 5 2/3 innings. Ploeger pitched a perfect 1 1/3 innings in relief.

Principia used a grand slam home run in the fifth inning to break a 3-3 tie.
