A candlelight vigil will be held to raise awareness of child abuse neglect in Iowa, as well as to remember the children who died as a result of abuse.
Organized by the local CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocate) program, the "Light of Hope" vigil will be Thursday, April 11, 5 p.m., at the Buena Vista County Courthouse. The public is invited.
According to preliminary figures, child abuse rose 22 percent during 2001 in the state. Part of that is due to increased reporting of suspected cases, while the rise is also the result of more neglect cases partially due to the downturn in the economy, according to Prevent Child Abuse Iowa.
April is National Child Abuse Prevention and Awareness Month. There will also be a blue ribbon campaign, which started in 1989 by a Virginia grandmother whose grandson was murdered.
