FORT PIERCE, Fla. - Two area products helped Buena Vista to a victory on its spring break trip in Florida.
Dan Christiansen, a former Sioux Central prep, fired a four-hit complete game shutout, and Dan Nuehring, a former Laurens-Marathon prep, went 3-for-3 with a double and an RBI as Buena Vista blanked Earlham 4-0 on Sunday.
Christiansen allowed just four singles, walked two and struck out 11 batters over seven innings to pick up his second win of the year.
The Beavers totaled 10 hits in the game. Nuehring collected three, while Nick Beard added two, including a double. Ben Lickteig had a double as well. Justin McAtee delivered an RBI single.
Buena Vista dropped the first game to Massachusetts College 6-5. The Beavers had only three hits. Tom Cooper had a double and Beard a triple. Nathan Kluve suffered the loss. He allowed nine hits, four earned runs, walked one and struck out four over six innings.
Grinnell won a slugfest over Buena Vista 16-12 in the second game of the day. Buena Vista pitchers allowed 16 hits and 11 earned runs.
The Beavers pounded out 15 hits in the contest. Nuehring drove in two runs with a double. Cooper also had two RBIs.
Lickteig, Beard, McAtee, Cory Kennedy, Justin Burns and Travis Wielenga each drove in a run. Burns, Lickteig and Lance Ploeger each had a double.
Grinnell scored six runs in the first inning, but Buena Vista countered with seven. Grinnell added five more runs in the sixth inning.
Buena Vista is now 6-2 overall.
