Bishop Last to preach at St. Mark's anniversary event

St. Mark Lutheran Church is about to begin a year-long celebration marking its first 50 years of existence. The anniversary year will run from March 3 l, 2002, to March 5, 2003, under the theme of "Lift High the Cross."

The festivities begin with the Kickoff on Easter Sunday, March 31. Bishop Michael Last, of the Western Iowa Synod, will be the guest speaker for this special event.

The Reverend Dr. Michael A. Last was ordained in 1972. He attended William Penn College, where he received his B.A., Northwestern Lutheran Theological Seminary, M. Div., and Graduate Theological Foundation, D. Min.

Bishop Last's past calls include: Hope Lutheran Church in Cedar Rapids; Trinity Lutheran Church in Spencer; St. Paul Lutheran Church in Clinton; Augustana Lutheran Church in Sioux City, and Western Iowa Synod, Storm Lake.

He has served on many committees and in many roles as Assistant to the Bishop. Bishop Last has also been involved at the churchwide level. He was a Churchwide Assembly participant three times, was part of the shared staff with the Division for Outreach, and a Global Mission presenter.

He was a volunteer at the Siouxland Humane Society, a Board President for The Arch, was on the Ethics Committee at Mercy Hospital, was a national presenter for L'Arche Federation, and President of Sioux City and Clinton Ministerial Associations.

Sunday, July 14 is the date of the "Main Event" which will be held at the Alta Community Center. The community is invited to join the St. Mark congregation in their celebratory kick-off Easter weekend services on Saturday, March 30, at 5:30 p.m. and on Sunday, March 31, at 6:30 and 10:30 a.m.
