Educating each other is the first step towards promoting what Buena Vista County has in its own backyard. And that's the goal of the Buena Vista County Convention and Visitors Bureau.
"Our biggest goal is to educate Buena Vista County and all of Storm Lake on things only 20 minutes away," said Marilyn Monson, director of the Storm Lake Chamber of Commerce.
The county convention and visitors bureau met last week for a "brochure night," where representatives from across the county and most of its towns exchanged information about attractions in each other's communities.
The group is made up of all volunteers.
"They are combining their efforts to make not only Storm Lake, but all of Buena Vista County a destination for tourism and family vacations," Monson said. "Representatives of individual towns come together as a group and there is a group effort to promote each of our attractions.
"The first thing we had to do was educate ourselves about each other's attractions," she added.
That education is an ongoing. Last fall there was a bus tour of attractions outside of Storm Lake, from Newell to Albert City and Marathon, to Sioux Rapids and down to Hanover.
A bus tour of Storm Lake attractions is being planned for Saturday, April 6, which will be hosted by another group, the Storm Lake Convention and Visitors Bureau. This group is primarily responsible for promoting Storm Lake events.
The bus tour will start at the county historical museum and will include visits to the Harker House, the Tree Museum and Buena Vista University.
