Buena Vista opens season with four wins

Nick Beard collected three hits and drove in two runs in the first game and belted a three-run home run in the nightcap as Buena Vista swept a doubleheader from Nebraska Wesleyan 14-13 and 9-6 on Sunday in Lincoln, Neb.

The opener featured plenty of offense by both clubs. The Beavers pounded out 16 hits and Nebraska Wesleyan had 17.

Buena Vista scored six runs in the fifth inning and took a 14-8 lead into the bottom of the seventh before yielding five runs in the bottom of the inning. The Beavers won despite committing five errors.

Beard had two doubles and a single to lead the Beavers. Quinn Hildman had two hits, including a double, and scored three runs.

Tom Cooper, Ben Lickteig, Dan Nuehring and Travis Wielenga all had two hits apiece. Justin McAtee drove in two runs. Beard, Wielenga and Lance Ploeger scored two runs apiece.

Nathan Kleve was the winning pitcher. He allowed eight hits, four earned runs, walked one and struck out five over five innings. Adam Rath and Cody Tibbetts pitched in relief.

Buena Vista managed only five hits in the second game. Beard had a three-run homer, while Hildmann collected two hits. Lickteig delivered an RBI double.

Buena Vista scored four runs in the second inning and took advantage of four errors.

Ploeger picked up the win in relief. He allowed two hits and no runs while walking none and striking out three in 3 1/3 innings of relief.

Mike Fong pitched the first 3 2/3 innings, allowing seven hits and five earned runs while walking four and striking out one.

‰ Buena Vista opened its season on Saturday by winning both games of a doubleheader against Graceland College by scores of 7-3 and 11-6 in Lamoni.

Dan Christiansen allowed three runs on eight hits, walked three and struck out eight over six innings to get the win for the Beavers.

Tom Cooper drove in three runs. Quinn Hildman had the game-winning RBI with a suicide-squeeze bunt in the top of the seventh inning.

Buena Vista scored four runs in the top of the seventh to go ahead 7-3. Cody Tibbetts pitched a perfect seventh inning to finish the game.

Nick Beard hit a two-run home run and drove in three runs in the nightcap.

Eric Hoffman pitched six innings to record the win. The Beavers had an 11-1 lead going into the bottom of the sixth inning before Graceland scored five runs. Jeremiah Knutzen pitched the final inning, retiring the side.

Buena Vista is now 4-0 overall.
