Rodeo teen is number 1 in wild saddle bronc ranks

Before the gate opens, 18-year-old Shannon Nagel's mind is doing only one thing - concentrating.

"Bronc riding gives you a rush. You don't even realize what's going on, it just happens," said the current point leader in saddle bronc riding in the state. "You have to concentrate to make sure you do everything you need to right."

This is Nagel's second year competing in the Iowa High School Rodeo for Sioux Central High School. The junior is currently ranked number one in saddle bronc riding in Iowa. He leads with 58 1/2 points.

He only totaled 56 points for all of last season. Right now he is aiming to have over 100 when he heads to Fort Madison for state finals. There's five more rodeos before then.

While he is currently ranked number one, he's not letting it go to his head.

"I don't pay that much attention to my points," said Nagel, the son of Jeff and Kelly Nagel of Peterson. "It brings you down if you pay too much attention to them."
