BV softball team opens season at St. Thomas

ST. PAUL, Minn. - The Buena Vista softball team opened its season over the weekend by playing five games in the St. Thomas Invitational in St. Paul, Minn.

Buena Vista beat Carleton 3-1, but lost to St. Thomas 11-3, St. Benedict 5-0, St. Thomas 9-4 and Gustavus Adolphus 7-1.


Buena Vista's games at Nebraska Wesleyan on Saturday and Sunday were postponed until March 17.

Grigsby honored

Lanny Grigsby of Storm Lake was inducted into the Iowa Officials Hall of Fame over the weekend at the girls state basketball tournament.

Grigsby, a former Buena Vista and Storm Lake High School baseball coach, has worked eight state championship football games and 17 semifinal games in his career. This service award is selected by the Hall of Fame Committee and is presented to seven or eight individuals each year.

Women's Basketball

The women's basketball team held their banquet Sunday and issued the following awards:

Super Sub: Marsha Rupert. Jeannie Henningsen Top Offensive Player: Amy Meggers. Top Defensive Player: Jessica Jensen. Most Valuable Player: Amy Meggers and Allison Schultz. John Naughton Coaches Award: Kylee Heiland. Career blocked shot school record: Jennifer Lange (100). Academic all-Iowa Conference: Kylee Heiland, Allison Schultz, Hilary Minish and Jessica Jensen. All-Iowa Conference: Amy Meggers. Captains for 2002-03 season: Jessica Jensen and Kelli Taylor.

Track and Field

The 4x400 meter relay team of Erin Steinkamp, Amy Nieland, Kelly McClure and Jessica Jensen finished with a time of 4 minutes, 1.44 seconds in the preliminaries, but failed to qualify for the finals at the NCAA Division III Indoor Track and Field National Championships on Saturday.
