St. Mary's call leads to child abuse arrest

Wednesday, March 13, 2002

Storm Lake Police initiated an investigation into a possible child abuse case Friday when school officials from St. Mary's School reported that an 11-year-old juvenile male might be a victim of physical abuse.

Storm Lake Police assisted by the Iowa Department of Human Services investigated the incident and determined that the 11-year-old victim had been beaten with a belt by his father and he sustained injuries from the beating.

Police located Hugo Cruz, 43 of Storm Lake, at his residence at 611 Iowa Street, and placed him under arrest. Cruz resisted arrest and fought with the officers, according to a police statement. After a brief struggle, Cruz was restrained and transported to the Buena Vista County Jail.

Storm Lake Police charged Cruz with Child Endangerment (serious misdemeanor) and Interference With Official Acts (simple misdemeanor). He was booked into jail on $2,275 cash bond.
