STORM LAKE - Scott Ellens scored 16 points and pulled down nine rebounds as Storm Lake snapped a six-game losing streak with a 49-39 victory over LeMars in a Lakes Conference game last Friday night at Tornado Fieldhouse.
Storm Lake, which finished the regular season 11-10 overall, played MOC-Floyd Valley (16-4) in a district semifinal game on Monday night in Orange City.
Storm Lake led 12-8 after the first quarter, but trailed 29-27 at halftime. It was 40-34 Tornadoes heading into the fourth period.
Storm Lake made 16 of 36 field goals in the game for 44 percent and were 15 of 23 from the free-throw line.
Mike Pierce scored 13 points for the Tornadoes, while A.J. Spielman added nine and Tyler Youde eight. Pierce collected six rebounds, Nick Skibsted five and Bob Blanchard four.
"Defensively, we really did a nice job," Storm Lake coach Tim Keigan said. "We were aggressive on the ball and really helped out our teammates. Rory Fulcher and Kurt Hanna did a great job the first half getting in the passing lanes and getting some steals."
"Offensively, we moved the ball well and made a lot of backdoor cuts," Keigan added. "A.J. did a nice job of getting us in our offense and handling the defensive pressure that LeMars is so good at. I thought our front line really controlled things down low the whole game. We rebounded hard and got a lot of good looks down in the paint. Overall, it was a great team effort and the timing was perfect going into tournaments."
