S-C's Rydberg falls short in semifinals

DES MOINES - Kelly Rydberg of Schaller-Crestland will have to settle for a third-place finish at best as he was defeated in the semifinals 8-6 in overtime by Henry Wahle of Underwood on Friday night at the state wrestling tournament in Des Moines.

Rydberg will wrestle in the consolation round today with a chance to finish as high as third at 140 pounds.

Rydberg advanced to the semifinals after winning his first two matches. He won in the first round by major decision 16-5 over David Dotson of Wilton. Rydberg then beat Travis Pike of Nora Springs-Rock Falls 8-0 in the quarterfinals.

LM-ACT's David Winkler was eliminated at 145 pounds in the consolation third round Friday night. Winkler lost by decision 5-4 in overtime to Jake Collins of Kingsley-Pierson.

Winkler posted a 4-3 decision over Sidney's Wyatt Yates in the first round. Winkler then was defeated 17-2 by Chase Weller of Bedford in the quarterfinals.

Winkler beat Adam Loutsch of Akron-Westfield 4-3 in the consolation second round.

Schaller-Crestland's Nelson Weber and Sioux Central's Richie Thacker were both eliminated in the consolation second round.

Weber, who wrestles at 275, was a 9-4 winner over North Cedar's Nick Sander in the first round. He then lost 12-1 to Blake Dodd of Dike-New Hartford in the quarterfinals and lost by pin in 2:04 to Mike Weber of Don Bosco Gilbertville in the consolation second round.

Thacker, who brought in a 40-1 record at 112 pounds, was pinned in the first round in 4 minutes, 48 seconds by Travis Stangel of Nora Springs-Rock Falls.

Thacker then won by decision 12-10 over Griswold's Max Starlin in the consolation first round and lost by pin in 4:45 to Brett Ray of Orient-Macksburg in the consolation second round.

‰ The first round was not kind to Storm Lake's wrestlers. Dylan Wagener lost by decision 15-12 to Iowa City West's Brad Stockton at 130. Pete Harder was pinned by Sioux City Heelan's Pat Allibone in 2:30 at 135, while Jared Ponsor was pinned by Osklaoosa's Kory Morrow in 2:39 at 171 pounds.

The consolation first-round matches saw all three Tornadoes eliminated from the state tournament.

Wagener was defeated 9-5 by Brandon Kelsey of Waterloo West. Wagener finished the season with a 27-12 record.

Harder lost by decision 8-3 to Ankeny's Colby Goetsch. He finished the year 27-16. Ponsor came up short 5-4 to Ankeny's Steve Wonderlin at 171. Ponsor finished the season 16-7.

‰ AGH's Brian Borchers had a tough first day at the tournament. He entered the state meet with a 36-2 record, but was eliminated after the first two rounds.

Borchers lost his first match by pin in 5:59 to Ted Drees of Dyersville Beckman. Borchers then suffered an 8-5 setback to Kyle Lehman of Winterset in the consolation first round. He finished the season 36-4.
