SL man injured in car-train collision

Wednesday, February 20, 2002

Andrew Smith, 28, of Storm Lake, was taken by ambulance to Buena Vista Regional Medical Center and airlifted to Mercy Hospital in Sioux City Monday afternoon after an eastbound Canadian National-Illinois Central train collided with his car at the Ontario crossing near West 5th Street in Storm Lake.

The driver apparently crossed the tracks northbound, with the engine of the train striking the left rear door area of the car, spinning it off the track and wedging it deep into the soft soil on the north side. The accident was reported at about 2:10 Monday. Storm Lake firefighters and paramedics helped to extricate Smith. The train was allowed to proceed at 3:10 p.m., while the road remained closed to allow for clean-up. Circumstances of the accident remain under investigation.
