State tournament berths on the line for wrestlers

FORT DODGE - District wrestling tournaments for Classes 1A, 2A and 3A will be held today at various sites throughout the state.

Storm Lake will begin its postseason this year in a new class. The Tornadoes have moved up to Class 3A and will compete in a district meet at Fort Dodge. The meet is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m.

The teams participating at Fort Dodge include Ames, Boone, Denison-Schleswig, Fort Dodge, Johnston, Mason City and Spencer.

Opponents won't be decided until after a seeding meeting takes place this morning.

Storm Lake will be led by Tyler Nichols at 103 pounds, Dylan Wagener at 130, Pete Harder at 135 and Jared Ponsor at 171.

The top two place-finishers in each weight class advance to the state tournament Feb. 21-23 at Veterans Auditorium in Des Moines.

A Class 1A district wrestling tournament will be held today at noon in Pocahontas.

Eight area wrestlers will be vying for a state tournament appearance.

Kyle Edwards of Alta will take on Tony Hager of Ogden in the first round at 103 pounds.

Sioux Central's Richie Thacker will face Eagle Grove's Blake Lindstrom in the first round at 112 pounds. Thacker qualified for state a year ago.

LM-ACT's J.B. Johnsen will wrestle Corey Anderson of Ogden at 130 pounds.

Schaller-Crestland's Jeff Witzke will match up with Dana Vote of Twin River Valley in the first round at 135 pounds, while the Wildcats' Kelly Rydberg will meet Jeff Cirks of Twin River Valley at 140 pounds.

Rydberg was a state qualifier last season at 135 pounds for the Wildcats.

LM-ACT's David Winkler will square off against Adam Swalla of South Hamilton at 145 pounds.

Alta's Blake Huseman, who won the sectional title at 189 pounds last week, will face Jake Head of South Hamilton.

Schaller-Crestland's Nelson Weber will wrestle Wesly Lamphier of Manson Northwest Webster in a first round match at 275 pounds.

A Class 2A district meet will be held today at noon in Cherokee. AGH will have two wrestlers hoping to punch their state tournament tickets.

AGH's Matt Gustafson will take on Okoboji's Skyler Moore in a first round match at 130 pounds. Gustafson qualified for the state tournament last season.

Brian Borchers, who wrestles at 275 pounds, will square off with Emmetsburg's David Bredehoeft in the first round.
