HOLSTEIN - Mike Modrell scored 15 points and Lucas Schossow added 13 to help send Galva-Holstein to a 54-44 victory over Storm Lake St. Mary's on Friday night at Holstein.
St. Mary's jumped out to a 10-9 lead after the first quarter but the Pirates used a 20-10 spurt in the second quarter to take a 29-20 halftime lead. The Pirates led 38-26 in the third quarter when Joe Fitzgerald hit back-to-back 3-pointers to pull St. Mary's within 38-32. Galva-Holstein led 44-35 after three.
Eric Wordekemper scored 21 points to lead St. Mary's, which finished the regular season 8-13 overall. Fitzgerald tossed in 12 points. Kyle Drey cleared seven rebounds, Wordekemper six and Fitzgerald five. Drey charted three assists, as did Wordekemper.
St. Mary's made 15 of 45 field goals for 33 percent. The Pirates were 14 of 35 from the field for 40 percent.
"We had too many mental breakdowns defensively," St. Mary's coach Phil Skamser said. "It came down to giving up easy baskets and they were momentum-swingers. We have to get to the free-throw line more than six times. I thought our guys played hard. We're playing tough competition right now."
