Rival Cherokee prolongs SL skid to 6 games

STORM LAKE - Mike Pierce scored a career-high 22 points and A.J. Spielman added a career-high 21, but it wasn't enough as Lakes Conference rival Cherokee came away with a 77-67 victory on Friday.

It was Storm Lake's sixth straight loss.

Cherokee jumped out to a 21-13 lead in the first quarter, but A.J. Spielman scored five straight points to pull Storm Lake within 21-18. Cherokee led 23-18 after the first quarter.

The Braves pulled away to a 36-27 lead late in the second quarter before Storm Lake closed the first half with a 9-2 spurt to pull within 38-36 at halftime. Mike Pierce made two 3-pointers during that stretch.

Cherokee built a 41-36 before Storm Lake tied it up. The Braves then used a 10-4 spurt to take a 51-45 lead late in the third period. Cherokee held a 53-47 lead heading into the fourth quarter of play.

The Braves used an 11-6 spurt in the first 4 minutes of the fourth quarter to extend their lead to 64-53.

Storm Lake would get no closer than eight points in the final 3 minutes.

Scott Ellens tossed in 16 points for Storm Lake, now 6-9 in the league and 10-10 overall.

Storm Lake made 23 of 46 field goals for 50 percent. Cherokee was 30 of 57 for 53 percent.

Kyle Stevens led Cherokee with 26 points. Eric DeRoo added 20 points.
