STORM LAKE - Greta Pemsl finished with 25 points and 15 rebounds to lead four players in double figures as the University of Dubuque got past Buena Vista 77-75 in an Iowa Conference game on Saturday night at Siebens Center.
Dubuque shot 44 percent in the first half to build a 37-31 lead at the break. The Spartans shot 44 percent in the second half to maintain their lead.
The Beavers cut it to 75-72 on a layup by Kelli Taylor with 15 seconds remaining, but Irene Smieleski made two free throws with 12 seconds left.
Buena Vista's Amy Meggers made a 3-pointer with 1 second to go to make it closer.
Dubuque made 26 of 59 field goals for 44 percent, while Buena Vista was 28 of 78 from the field for 36 percent.
Dubuque converted 21 of 25 free throws compared to Buena Vista's 12 of 19.
Buena Vista won the battle inside, outrebounding Dubuque 49-39.
Meggers finished the game with 24 points, 15 rebounds and three steals for Buena Vista, now 5-11 in the league and 9-14 overall. Jennifer Lange added 13 points and nine rebounds, while Taylor had 12 points and four assists.
Allison Schultz contributed eight points, six rebounds and two assists, while Megan Holtorf charted three assists.
Buena Vista visits Upper Iowa and Luther this Friday and Saturday.
