BV beats Wartburg, leads IIAC by 2 games

STORM LAKE - Adam Jones finished with 23 points and eight assists as Buena Vista moved closer to clinching the Iowa Conference title with an 86-76 victory over Wartburg on Tuesday night at Siebens Center.

Buena Vista has a two-game lead with four games remaining in the league. The Beavers, ranked 19th, are 13-1 in the league and 17-4 overall.

The Beavers trailed in the opening half 23-16 before they took the lead 31-29 at the 5:44 mark.

Buena Vista would use a 15-6 spurt the rest of the half to extend their lead to 46-35 by intermission.

Jones was the leading scorer in the first half with 11 points. Wartburg was led by Mike Pipho with eight first-half points.

The Beavers made 15 of 28 field goal attempts for 54 percent and Wartburg connected on 10 of 23 shots.

Buena Vista extended its lead to 16 points in the second half before a spurt by the Knights sparked by a technical foul on the Wartburg bench at the 11:23 mark.

The Beavers converted three free throws to extend their lead to double digits. The Knights scored eight unanswered points to cut the deficit to 63-61 with 7:54 remaining.

Buena Vista responded with seven unanswered points for a 70-61 lead and maintained the lead by hitting its free throws down the stretch.

Wartburg's leading scorer, Pipho, picked up his fifth foul with 2 minutes remaining and finished with 14 points. Teammate Jake Olsen would finish with 12 points and Roger Kobliska came off the bench to score 13 points.

Scott Weber scored 13 points, Robby Beyer had 11 and Jeremy Holmes added 10 for BV.

Weber led all rebounders with nine. Beyer had seven rebounds and Scott Swalley six.

Buena Vista made 25 of 54 field goals for 46 percent. Wartburg was 26 of 57 for 46 percent.

Buena Vista converted 32 of 44 free-throw attempts compared to 17 of 23 for Wartburg.

Buena Vista hosts Loras and Dubuque this Friday and Saturday.
