Updates from the Storm Lake Police Department and the Buena Vista County Sheriff's Office.


On February 1, an accident occurred in the 100 block of East 6th Street. A 1996 GMC, driven by Travis Piercy, 24, was stopped at a flashing red light. A 1990 Mercury, driven by Wanette Moval, 73, of Alta, was backing out of a parking spot and struck the Piercy vehicle. Damage to the vehicles is estimated at $300 for the Piercy vehicle and none to the Moval vehicle.

On January 30, at 1:25 a.m. an accident was reported. An unknown vehicle was traveling east on Poplar Lane attempting to turn north onto Hickory Lane and struck a fire hydrant owned by the city of Storm Lake. Damage to the hydrant is estimated at $500.

On January 29, at 11:45 p.m., an accident occurred at Taco John's, 211 East Milwaukee Avenue. A 1999 Buick, driven by John Grundmeier, 42, of 811 Pinecrest Drive, was parked in the Taco John's drive through. A pick-up pulling a trailer attempted to go around the Grundmeier vehicle and struck the Grundmeier vehicle. Damage to the Grundmeier car is estimated at $700.

On February 2, at about 1:08 a.m., a City of Storm Lake Chevy dump truck, driven by Edwin Bredvick 42, was leaving the street maintenance shed lot on East 4th Street with the box raised. As the vehicle passed under power lines, the box came in contact with the line, snapping it in two. The break caused a power outage in the area north of East 4th Street and east of Oneida Street, including traffic signals at three intersections. MidAmerica Energy was able to restore power about 40 minutes later. MidAmerica crews worked the remainder of the night to repair the damage. There were no injuries. MidAmerica's damage estimate was $3,000. There was no damage to the dump truck.

On February 3, at 12:17 p.m., a hit and run accident occurred in the parking lot of Buena Vista Regional Medical Center, 1525 West 5th Street. A 1988 ambulance, driven by Robert Christensen, 59, Alta was southbound in the parking lot, on an ambulance call. A Chevy truck, driven by an unknown person, pulled out of a parking stall, and struck the ambulance. Damage was estimated at $500 to the ambulance.

On February, 3, at 7 p.m., an accident occurred at 1717 Tulip Lane, a 1995 Oldsmobile, owned by Francisco Salazar-Rangel, was parked behind the garage in the private parking lot. A 1998 Dodge, driven by Belisario Espinoza-Gonzalez, 41, 1717 Tulip Lane #7, was intentionally rammed into the Salazar-Rangel vehicle to move it out of the drive. Espinoza-Gonzalez was charged with OWI and Reckless Driving. Damage was estimated at $2,500 to the Salazar-Rangel vehicle and none to the Espinoza-Gonzalez vehicle.

On January 31, at 9:40 a.m., an accident occurred at the intersection of Flindt Drive and Russell Street. A 1992 Chevy, driven by Lester Suhr, 68, Alta, was stopped facing south for the stoplight at the intersection. A 1993 Nissan, driven by Jose Guerra-Flores, 20, 820 Barton Street, was turning northbound onto Russell Street, lost control and slid into the Suhr vehicle. Guerra-Flores was charged with Fail To Maintain Control. Damage was estimated at $500 to the Suhr vehicle and $400 to the Guerra-Flores vehicle.

On January 31, at 3:35 p.m, an accident occurred at the intersection of Lake Avenue and Milwaukee Avenue. A 1993 Lexus, driven by Ken Nguyen, 30, 1103 West Milwaukee Avenue, was eastbound on Milwaukee Avenue. A 1993 Pontiac, driven by Steven Schaefer, 59, Schaller, while turning southbound onto Lake Avenue from East Milwaukee Avenue (because of a semi truck at the intersection) did not see the Nguyen vehicle. The vehicles collided. Schaefer was charged with Fail to Yield Upon Making a Left Turn. Damage was estimated at $2,000 to the Nguygen vehicle and $3,000 to the Schaefer vehicle.


On Wednesday, January 30, Robert McLaughlin of 524 Rushlake Road, Laurens, reported vandalism to the rear window of his vehicle while parked at Methodist Manor, 1206 West 4th Street, Storm Lake. Damage to the window is estimated at $300.

On February 3, 2002, Doug O'Bannon, 323 College Avenue, reported a dent in the driver's side panel of his vehicle while parked at his residence. Damage was estimated at $350.

On January 31, Thomas McCardell, Linn Grove, reported four tires on his vehicle punctured while parked in the Wal-Mart parking lot. Damage was estimated at $320.


On Sunday, February 3, an employee of Dyno's, 1201 Lakeshore Drive, reported the theft of five gallons of gas. The value of the gas was estimated at $5.
