BOYS BASKETBALL ROUNDUP - St. Mary's runs past Sioux Central

SIOUX RAPIDS - Billy Mach poured in a career-high 20 points to lead three players in double figures as Storm Lake St. Mary's raced past Sioux Central 72-51 in a Northwest Conference game on Tuesday night at Sioux Rapids.

St. Mary's held a 16-14 lead after the first quarter and held a 28-26 halftime advantage. The Panthers used a 17-9 spurt in the third quarter to extend their lead to 45-35 by the end of the third period of play. Kyle Drey scored 16 points and Eric Wordekemper added 14 for St. Mary's. Joe Fitzgerald scored eight points.

Tyler Vaudt scored 18 points to lead Sioux Central, now 9-8 overall. Kyle Rehnstrom added 12 points.

Aurelia 67, Alta 54

Heath Brecher tossed in a game-high 23 points and grabbed 12 rebounds to lead four players in double figures as Aurelia upended Alta in a Northwest Conference game on Tuesday night at Aurelia.

Aurelia held a 17-15 lead after the first quarter and took a 28-26 advantage into halftime. The Bulldogs led 45-40 after three periods of play before gradually extending the lead.

John Bentsen finished with 12 points, six rebounds and five blocked shots for Aurelia, while Eric Sonksen added 11 points and eight assists. Bill Weathers scored 10 points, while Kasey Reilly handed out five assists.

The difference in the game was free throws. Aurelia, now 8-9 overall, made 20 of 28 compared to just 4 of 8 for Alta.

Eric Holton led Alta with 19 points, four assists and two steals. Brad Bunjes added 12 points, 12 rebounds, two assists and two blocked shots. Steve Hamer had nine points and Heath Glienke eight rebounds and three assists.

Aurelia made 23 of 51 field goals for 45 percent.
