In 1875 and 1876 a number of old settlers at Storm Lake formed an Old Settlers Association, for mutual pleasure and profit. The only requirement of membership was a residence in the county prior to, and including, the year 1870.
A picnic was held in Storm Lake in 1876, which was well attended. At this picnic a historical review of the county from the earliest date up to that time was read by Pilot-Tribune founder Colonel Vestal, and addresses were delivered by Judge Robinson, Lot Thomas, J.D. Adams and others, but unhappily they were never preserved.
The Association did not hold any meetings after the picnic was held, as far as can be gathered from any of the members, and was not again heard of. If it had been continued the history of the county might be far more complete.
The 'Old Settlers Reunion' committee (D.A.R.) would like to hear from anyone who has descendants that helped to settle Buena Vista County in the 1800's. Please call 712-732-6693, 712-732-1373 or e-mail firstname.lastname@example.org
Plans are being made to hold the reunion June 15, in Storm Lake, depending on the amount of interest shown.
