ALTA - Heath Glienke poured in a game-high 23 points to lead three players in double figures in helping Alta pull off a 59-50 upset over No. 7 Newell-Fonda in a Northwest Conference game on Tuesday night at Alta.
Alta led 15-14 after the first quarter, but trailed 30-26 at halftime. It was 44-42 Newell-Fonda heading into the fourth period. The Cyclones outscored the Mustangs 17-6 in the final 8 minutes of play.
Jared Johnson scored 13 points and Josh Droegmiller 10 for the Cyclones, now 11-5 overall. Glienke had three 3-pointers. Glienke cleared 11 rebounds, Johnson nine and Tyler Droegmiller seven. Eric Holton handed out six assists, while Glienke and Josh Droegmiller each had two. Johnson, Josh Droegmiller and Tyler DeMan all had two steals apiece.
Jason Ripke led Newell-Fonda with 13 points and eight rebounds. Beau Artist and Jared Daniel scored eight points apiece.
Eric Johnson collected eight rebounds and Austin Wells seven. Artist handed out four assists and Matt Stauter three. Johnson blocked five shots, while Edwards had three for the Mustangs, now 11-3 overall.
Alta made 22 of 61 field goals for 36 percent. Newell-Fonda was 17 of 56 for 30 percent, including 8 of 23 from 3-point range.
"This was a good team victory," Alta coach Larry McNutt said. "We handled their pressure, rebounded well and played pretty good defense. I was very proud of the way our guys hung tough, stayed poised, and executed."
"We did not have a good defensive game," Newell-Fonda coach Paul Loos said. "We gave up too many layups and power slides. They were more aggressive going to the basket. We did not attack the inside like we should have. The team that is more aggressive is going to have the advantage."
Aurelia 64, Schaller-Crestland 59
Kasey Reilly scored a career-high 23 points and handed out eight assists to help power Aurelia to a win over Schaller-Crestland in a Northwest Conference game on Tuesday at Aurelia.
Aurelia jumped out to an 18-8 lead after the first quarter and took a 34-27 lead at the half. It was 46-42 entering the fourth period of play.
Eric Sonksen scored 14 points and added seven assists, four rebounds and two steals. Dan Beatty scored 10 points, had seven rebounds, two assists and two steals. John Bentsen added seven points and 10 rebounds for the Bulldogs, now 5-6 in the league and 5-8 overall.
Jason Pyle led Schaller-Crestland with 15 points. Marcus Malcom and Nathan Johnson each added 14, and Kevin Drake had 10.
Aurelia made 24 of 44 field goals for 55 percent. Schaller-Crestland was 21 of 41 for 51 percent.
"It was a great team effort," Aurelia coach Jim Demers said. "Kasey really got us going."
Sioux Central 69, AC-T 47
Tyler Vaudt led all scorers with 21 points as Sioux Central knocked off Albert City-Truesdale in Northwest Conference play on Tuesday night.
AC-T took a 14-11 lead after the first quarter, but Sioux Central rallied for a 29-24 halftime advantage. The Rebels increased their lead to 43-35 entering the fourth period.
Jason Ferguson finished with 14 points and Nate Wittmaack added 11 for the Rebels, who were aided by eight 3-pointers and 11 of 12 free-throw shooting.
Jake Heuton led AC-T with 15 points. Taylor Heideman added 10 and Caleb Garberding nine.
