Some good advice: save your ID information

Thursday, January 24, 2002

Identity theft is on the rise. We have all heard the horror stories about fraud that is committed by stealing your name, address, social security number, credit cards and the like.

Here are some suggestions to help protect your identity, from the Buena Vista County Emergency Management Department.

*Photocopy the contents of your wallet/purse. Do both sides of each license, credit card, etc. You will have all the account numbers as well as contact numbers to cancel if necessary.

*Keep copies of information in a safe place if traveling, maybe a copy in your suitcase, as well as the glove compartment of your car. Copy your car registration and insurance data for safekeeping.

*Make a copy of a check, and include your local bank's telephone number. Know what check numbers you last used.

*In case of a theft, file a report with local law enforcement immediately. This proves to credit providers you were diligent and is a first step toward an investigation. Cancel your credit cards immediately if stolen or lost.

*Call the three national credit-reporting groups immediately to place a fraud alert on your name and Social Security number.
