The Alta Cyclones junior varsity boys basketball team used strong second and fourth quarters to capture a victory at Lake View on Jan. 16, defeating Wall Lake View-Auburn, 67-30.
Alta led after one frame by the score of 14-6, and the Cyclones then extended their lead to 33-16 at the half.
The third quarter was evenly matched between both squads, as the Cyclones and WLVA each scored eight points in the period. Alta put the game away in the fourth quarter, however, as the Cyclones steadily widened the lead throughout the last eight minutes and won by a final of 67-30.
Despite the big victory, head coach Grant Bousum said his team needs to play at a more consistent level throughout future ballgames.
"In my opinion I thought we played alright," Bousum said. "We showed signs of being a great team, but we just have to become more consistent. I thought we did a great job on the boards and this was as well as we have shot the ball for a while. We just have to continue to work on our defense in the halfcourt. I think we are continuing to get better every night out."
Four players scored in double figures for the Cyclones. Steve Hamer led the way with 14, Justin DeMan had 12, Thomas Allerdings had 11, and Nate Hinkeldey had 10.
Other Cyclones who chipped in were Nick Nesbitt with nine points, Heath Stille with six, Luke Letzring with three and Joel Corlew with two successful free-throw attempts.
DeMan pulled down 11 rebounds, Hinkeldey grabbed eight and Letzring and Hamer snagged five a piece. Nesbitt had five steals and DeMan and Hinkeldey each swiped two WLVA passes.
Nesbitt also dished out five assists for the Cyclones, now 7-5 on the season.
