STORM LAKE - Jeremy Holmes scored 16 points and Adam Jones added 14 as Buena Vista survived an upset scare from Luther to extend its winning streak to nine games with a 66-59 victory on Friday night at Siebens Center.
Jones moved into fourth place on the Buena Vista career scoring list. He needed 13 points to achieve that milestone.
Luther, now 1-14 overall, jumped out to an early 7-2 lead in the first half before Buena Vista scored 11 unanswered points to take a 13-7 lead.
Buena Vista eventually extended its lead to as much as six points at 28-22 late in the first half. The Beavers held a 30-27 lead at halftime.
Buena Vista opened the second half by scoring four of the first five points to grab a 34-28 lead. The Beavers stretched their lead to 13 points at 48-35 on a Jones 3-pointer. Holmes then scored to make it 50-35 with 10 1/2 minutes remaining.
A basket by Robby Beyer gave Buena Vista a 17-point lead, 56-39, with about 7 minutes left.
Luther scored eight unanswered points, including four by Justin Pieper, to cut it to 56-47. A 3-point play by Holmes pushed the lead back to 61-49 with just over 2 minutes to go.
Beyer scored 11 points and Scott Weber added 10 for the Beavers. Chris Petersen collected nine rebounds, Weber and Scott Swalley five apiece. Holmes had five assists, while Jones and Casey Pelzer each had three.
Buena Vista made 25 of 50 field goals for 50 percent, as did Luther. The Beavers converted 12 of 17 free throws to Luther's 5 of 7.
Buena Vista outrebounded the Norse 32-21.
Buena Vista, now 8-0 in the league and 12-3 overall, entertains Upper Iowa tonight.
