Alta freshman boys defeat Hurricanes, 54-45
The Alta freshman boys basketball team tamed the Albert City-Truesdale junior varsity Hurricanes on the road Monday night, 54-45, as the Cyclones used their pickpocketing abilities to turn a two-point lead into a nine-point victory.
The Cyclones trailed after the first quarter, 11-9, but came back and regained the lead going into the half, 26-23. Alta led by a score of 40-38 after three quarters, and extended that lead throughout the final period, winning the game, 54-45.
Joel Corlew led the Cyclones with a 17-point, six-rebound effort, while Justin DeMan scored 12 and Thomas Hansen finished with 8 points for Alta Adam Pederson snagged 10 rebounds and DeMan pulled down nine rebounds.
The Cyclones recorded 21 steals as a team, including nine by DeMan. Nick Nesbitt had four steals, and Corlew, Pederson and Jarrod Garrison each swiped two balls from the Hurricanes.
"I thought we played extremely hard against an older and bigger team," Coach Grant Bousum said. "We had 21 steals and many of those led to fast break points, which is the style of game we like to play against a bigger team such as AC-T. We also attacked the offensive boards really well, especially our big guys. We just could not put them away, but give credit to AC-T for battling us to the end of the game."
The win improves the freshman team's record to 4-3 on the season.
