BV wrestlers drop tightly-contested match

FAYETTE - It came down to the final match of the dual.

Jesus Wilson, ranked No. 1 in the nation at his weight class, posted a 7-2 win by decision over Buena Vista's Taylor Wood to give seventh-ranked Upper Iowa a 20-18 victory over 11th-ranked Buena Vista in an Iowa Conference dual meet on Saturday in Fayette.

Upper Iowa took a 3-0 lead when Aaron Destival decisioned Alex Brandenburg 5-2 at 149 pounds. Aaron Loewens gave Buena Vista a 5-3 lead with a win by technical fall over Andy Geerts, 15-0 at 157.

Upper Iowa took a 7-5 led when Buena Vista's Matt Doebel lost by major decision 10-2 at 165. However, Rick Delagardelle won by pin in 6 minutes, 38 seconds over James Giboo at 174 pounds to give the Beavers an 11-7 lead.

Upper Iowa's Brent Meyers tied it up at 11-all with an 11-3 major decision victory over the Beavers' Adam Buthe at 184 pounds.

Cliff Thompson, ranked No. 1 at 197, beat Michael Irvin 4-2 to give the Peacocks a 14-11 lead. Buena Vista's Dax Doran came back with a 5-4 win by decision at heavyweight to knot the dual at 14-all.

Jamie Taxted, ranked second at 125, gave Buena Vista an 18-14 lead with a 9-0 major decision win.

Upper Iowa closed the gap to 18-7 when Ralph Acosta, ranked sixth at 133, beat Mike Vagher by decision, 3-2.

Buena Vista, now 11-2 in duals, wrestles in the National Duals at Ohio State this weekend in Columbus.
