BOYS BASKETBALL ROUNDUP - Newell-Fonda blitzes Sac City
NEWELL - Jason Ripke poured in a game-high 24 points to lead four players in double figures as Newell-Fonda, ranked seventh in Class 1A, routed Sac City 93-56 in Northwest Conference play on Tuesday.
Newell-Fonda led 18-13 after the first quarter, 40-28 at halftime and 71-41 entering the fourth period of play.
Bryce Edwards scored 18 points for the Mustangs, now 9-1 overall. Matt Stauter added 17 and Jared Daniel 12.
Edwards, Stauter and Austin Wells all cleared six rebounds. Daniel added five. Beau Artist handed out nine assists and Stauter four. Edwards charted four steals, while Artist, Daniel and Ripke each had three. Eric Johnson blocked three shots.
Newell-Fonda made 39 of 76 field goals for 51 percent. Sac City was 18 of 51 from the field for 35 percent.
"I was happy with the way we hustled on the floor," Mustangs coach Paul Loos said. "We worked hard as a team. In the first half we put Sac City on the free-throw line too much, but we took care of the fouling in the second half."
Pomeroy-Palmer 81 Aurelia 55
Chris Hanssen scored 23 points and Nick Ford contributed 20 to help top-ranked Pomeroy-Palmer upend Aurelia on Tuesday.
Pomeroy-Palmer held leads of 16-11 after the first quarter, 34-26 at halftime and 54-41 entering the fourth period.
Heath Brecher led Aurelia, now 4-6 overall, with 20 points. Eric Sonksen finished with 15 and Kasey Reilly 10.
Sonksen charted nine rebounds, eight assists and two steals. Reilly had five assists and Brecher two steals.
Aurelia made 23 of 50 field goals for 46 percent, while Pomeroy-Palmer was 34 of 72 from the field for 47 percent.
Schaller-Crestland 58 Sioux Central 55
Schaller-Crestland held Sioux Central scoreless for a 4-minute stretch of the fourth quarter as it handed Sioux Central a setback on Tuesday night at Schaller.
Schaller-Crestland trailed 14-13 after the first quarter and 28-27 at the half. The Wildcats, however, took a 47-44 lead into the fourth quarter.
Jason Pyle scored 19 points to lead Schaller-Crestland. Marcus Malcom contributed 17 and Nathan Johnson 14.
Pyle collected 13 rebounds, Kevin Drake nine and Drew Wiener eight. Wiener handed out six assists. Pyle charted four steals and Malcom and Johnson each had three for the Wildcats, now 5-4 overall.
Tyler Vaudt scored 26 points for Sioux Central. Jason Ferguson netted 18.
Schaller-Crestland made 23 of 65 field goals for 35 percent. Sioux Central was 21 of 55 from the field for 38 percent.
"Defense basically won the game for us," Wildcats coach Josh Bellcock said. "From the 5-minute mark of the fourth quarter to under a minute left we held them scoreless."
