A Mercy Medical Center Air Care helicopter was forced to make an emergency landing late Friday after its crew reported smoke in the cockpit.
Authorities said the helicopter was taking an accident victim from Palo Alto County Hospital in Emmetsburg to Mercy Medical Center when it was forced to land just after 11 p.m. at the Algona Municipal Airport.
The patient, 29-year-old Aaron Wood of Rolfe, was injured when he lost control of his van on a county road in Pocahontas County.
The van overturned and burst into flames, authorities said.
An ambulance responded and transferred Wood to the Mason City hospital.
The pilot of the helicopter was able to fix the problem and flew out Saturday afternoon.
