SL boys hold off late charge from Alta
STORM LAKE - Jeff DeHaan poured in a game-high 24 points and Scott Ellens added 21 to help Storm Lake come away with a 74-72 victory over Alta in a nonconference game on Saturday night at Tornado Fieldhouse.
Ellens stole Alta's inbounds pass with 10 seconds remaining to help secure the victory for the Tornadoes, now 7-2 overall.
The game was tied at 15-15 at the end of the first quarter. Storm Lake led 32-30 at intermission and 53-49 entering the fourth period of play.
The Tornadoes led by as much as 14 points in the second half and held a 71-60 lead with 3 minutes to play before the Cyclones came charging back.
Alta used an 8-1 spurt to cut the deficit to 72-68. After an Ellens free throw, the Cyclones scored again to make it 73-70.
Mike Pierce added 12 points for Storm Lake.
Jared Johnson scored 20 points to lead Alta, now 7-3 overall. Heath Glienke tossed in 16, Eric Holton 14 and Brad Bunjes 11.
Johnson collected seven rebounds and Glienke six. Holton handed out 10 assists and charted three steals.
Storm Lake made 22 of 38 field goals for 58 percent. Alta was 26 of 61 for 43 percent. Storm Lake converted 28 of 44 free throws to Alta's 15 of 18.
Storm Lake plays at Spencer on Friday night.
