Memorial services for Ralph Mongan, 84, Aurelia, are today, Tuesday, January 8, at 10:30 a.m. at the First Congregational Church in Aurelia, with Lay Pastor Bruce Rapp officiating.
Burial will be in the Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Aurelia. Military honors will be by the Grashoff-McManus American Legion Post #390 of Aurelia.
Ralph Guy Mongan was born on May 17, 1917, in Aurelia, the son of Charles and Carrie (Hillary) Mongan. Ralph attended school in Aurelia and graduated from the Aurelia High School in 1934. On November 3, 1935, Ralph married Marianne Elizabeth Chandler in Aurelia. Ralph entered the U.S. Navy on June 6, 1944, and was honorably discharged in January 1946. Marianne died on May 11, 1978. Ralph married Astrid (Nelson) Johnson. Astrid died on March 10, 1996. He was a member of the First Congregational Church in Aurelia, a member of the Grashoff-McManus American Legion Post #390 of Aurelia, the VFW, and the Knights of Pythius. He enjoyed fishing, golfing and telling stories.
Ralph died on Saturday, January 5, at the Sunset Knoll Retirement Home in Aurelia where he has been a resident for two years.
Preceding Ralph in death were his parents, his wife Marianne, his second wife Astrid, three brothers, Carroll, Glenn and Lawrence Mongan, one sister, Ruth Conley, son-in-law, Bob Miller, and step daughter, Connie Allen.
Survivors include his daughter Gayle and her husband Red Brownmiller of Aurelia, son Gary and his wife Keiko Mongan of Warrenton, Va., step-daughter Helen Johnson of Lynchburg, Va., step-son-in-law, Robert and his wife Ruth Alien of Aurelia, 15 grandchildren and nine great-granchildren, and other relatives and friends.
