Petersen's layup gives BV tournament championship
THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. - Chris Petersen's layup beat the buzzer, and as a result, unranked Buena Vista beat 17th-ranked Gettysburg College 63-61 on Sunday in the championship game of the eighth annual Lutheran Brotherhood Tournament at California Lutheran University in Thousand Oaks, Calif.
Adam Jones, who was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player and the Iowa Conference Athlete of the Week, scored 18 points and collected six rebounds. Jones made four 3-pointers for Buena Vista, now 7-3 overall.
Buena Vista used a 13-2 run to pull away from a 33-31 lead to start the second half and went on to beat California Lutheran University 77-66 in the first round last Saturday.
Buena Vista held Cal Lutheran to 35 percent shooting in the first half, but held just a two-point lead at halftime, 33-31. The Beavers made 45 percent of their shots in the half. Cal Lutheran pulled to within 56-52 in the second half, but would get no closer. The Kingsmen led for nearly all of the first half, and at one point led 22-12 with 9:44 remaining.
Buena Vista shot 52 percent in the second half to Cal Lutheran's 39 percent to break the game open and snap the Kingsmen's six-game winning streak.
Jones scored 24 points and cleared eight rebounds for the Beavers. Robby Beyer added 12 points and Petersen 11. Scott Swalley collected nine rebounds and Scott Weber seven.
