Dorothy Catherine Daly was born on March 19, 1920 near Oto, at the home of her parents, George J. and Rose (Ainchem) Daly. She was the sixth of their eight children.
After completing her education in Woodbury County schools, Dorothy worked in Sioux City and in the Rembrandt area as a domestic.
On February 8, 1939, Dorothy married Sherill J. Whitaker in Aurelia. The couple farmed near Rembrandt until 1942 when they moved to a farm south of Greenville. In 1944 their daughter, Patricia, was born.
Dorothy enjoyed the duties of a farm wife, especially gardening and cooking. In addition, she enjoyed playing cards and entertaining friends and family.
