SLHS Concert Band prepares for Parade of Bands, trip to Epcot Center

Thursday, January 3, 2002

The Storm Lake High School Concert Band is preparing for the Parade of Bands Concert that will be held on February 27.

This will be the performance debut of the contest tunes they will be performing in Florida at the Musicfest Orlando National Music Contest. The program for Epcot will include these pieces as well as other literature.

The Pep Band has been performing at home basketball games providing entertainment for themselves as well as the game audiences.

The Jazz Ensemble is preparing for the State Jazz Band Contest at Sioux Central High School on January 12, ILCC Jazz Band Contest in Estherville on January 24, and the SLHS Swing Show at South Auditorium on February 2.

The annual SLHS Swing show will occur on Saturday, February 2, in the South Auditorium. Swing Shows from the past have been very much enjoyed by students, parents and the community as well. This year the event, which is more than just a concert, will feature vocal ensembles, jazz bands from both the high school and middle school and the "Jazz Orchestra" from the string department." There will be an admission charge of $4 for adults and $3 for students. This will be used to support the All-State Music account. More specific information on the show will be available as the show date gets closer.

Lastly the students have begun picking out music for solos and forming groups for the State Solo and Small Ensemble Festival which is held in March. This is very important educationally and also an enjoyable component of the music program. Students gain more skills and techniques in working on solo literature and gain great awareness of their purpose and the musicianship needed by being a member of a small ensemble. All students are encouraged to participate.
