Relaine Grotjohn, age 78, of Schaller, died Wednesday, December 26, 2001 at the Sterling House in Fort Dodge following a lengthy illness.
Funeral services will be Saturday, December 29 at 10:30 a.m. at Immanuel Reformed United Church of Christ, rural Schaller.
Relaine Josephine Rydberg was born April 3, 1923, the oldest of seven children, to Joe and Ethel Rydberg. Relaine grew up on the family farm near Galva. She graduated from Galva High School in 1940. After graduation, she worked for several area families.
Relaine married John Eugene Grotjohn on February 15, 1946 at the Presbyterian Church in Schaller following Eugene's discharge from service in the U.S. Army 39th Field Hospital. To this union four children were born: Maurice, Maurine, Janelle and Shirley. The family lived on the Bert and Maude Rininger farm north of Schaller. Farming was Eugene and Relaine's life-long occupation. After Eugene's death in 1977, Relaine moved to Schaller where she lived until ill health led her to move to the Sterling House in Fort Dodge.
Relaine was an active member of the Immanuel Reformed United Church of Christ in Schaller. She participated in the Women's Fellowship and served for several years on the Flower Committee and as treasurer of the church's Cemetery Committee. She was a leader of the Happy Hearts 4-H Club, a member of the C-Con Club, and participated in several card clubs. Relaine enjoyed fishing, traveling and she especially treasured time spent with children, grandchildren and family.
Those who survive to cherish her memory include her children: Maurice and Jacque Grotjohn, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, Maurine and Max Hale, Monument, Colorado, Janelle and Jim Conley, Battle Creek and Shirley and Jerry Thilges, Fort Dodge; ten grandchildren: Tina and Andrew Enkey, Tricia and Micheal Norman, John and Jodi Grotjohn, James Grotjohn, Lee Timan, Derek, Dana and Drew Conley, Brian and Michelle Thilges; five brothers and sisters: LuVerne and Marge Rydberg, Storm Lake, LaMerle and Roy Wilson, Galva, Dwayne and Janice Rydberg, Schaller, Marlys and Bruce Bennett, Storm Lake and Ronald and Mary Rydberg, Galva; two sisters-in-law: Arlene and Verner Movall, Schaller and Dorothea and Harrison Saathoff, Storm Lake; a close nephew Lindy Rydberg, Schaller; special friends Roger and Judy Kenny, Schaller and a host of other relatives and friends.
Relaine was preceded in death by her parents, her husband and an infant sister Joetta.
