On January 1 - 31 the Witter Gallery will exhibit its permanent collection of oil paintings by Ella Witter.
The Witter Gallery was dedicated in 1972 as the result of a generous gift from the Witter family and is very fortunate to have many original works by the namesake and founder among its collection. Post cards of some of the paintings will be available for sale throughout the month. Proceeds will benefit Witter Gallery programs.
Ms. Witter was born in 1882. She attended Storm Lake High School and graduated with honors from the Art Institute of Chicago. She then traveled to Europe and studied under Hans Hofmann. Later, she also studied with Diego Rivera in Mexico City. Ms. Witter's work shows the influence of a variety of techniques and styles, including abstract expressionism and cubism. She became a motivating force for art and art education in Iowa, serving as an art instructor and administrator in many school districts before her return to Storm Lake in 1940.
Sadly, Ms. Witter died in 1970 and did not see the opening of the art gallery she worked so hard to encourage and support.
The Witter Gallery is open to the public Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday, 1:30-4 p.m.; Thursday, 1"30-7 p.m., and Saturday, 10 a.m. to noon. Special arrangements may be made for group tours or classes. For more information about this exhibit or any Witter Gallery event, call 732-3400.
